Mixed update.
First, the AWESOME! Had the AWESOMEST tennis match in FOREVER! If I had gotten around to posting about it on Saturday I would have made some joke like "had an amazing time with Calvin last night!" but I was late.
Anyhow, while it wasn't quite as amazing as the day that I had in my lj memories, it was pretty damn good. I was going to play Calvin and work on my aggressive game, but two random guys on the court next to us challenged us to/suggested we play a game of doubles.
Calvin and I ended up winning 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3, and I had the most fun playing tennis since, well, probably since Freshman year at Mudd. (That's the one thing that was less than perfect about Mudd - didn't get as much tennis as I wanted, and after frosh year my level dropped.)
It wasn't perfect. My serve, honestly, sucked. Calvin eventually gave me a tip to loosen up a bit and go for it, so in the third set it was pretty ok, but still.
But the rest of my game just clicked after the first set. My returns were consistent. My forehand had PACE! (UBER thanks to Charles a few weeks back who took a quick camera video of me hitting, pointed out a hitch that was holding it back, and how I could fix it!) And my volleys ended up being good too! I had at least two dropshot return-of-serves, I had quality passing shots, good crosscourt slice.
But my favorite part was the feel of the court. The feel of the doubles match. I can't really describe it, but it was there. The feeling that I know where the ball is going to go before my opponents hit it. There were a few times that match, I was receiving serve, and managed to pick the right times to change up and go down the line on the return for a clean winner. Calvin set me up for lots of good poaches, and I picked the right times to guess crosscourt and the right times to stay put and cover the down the line, I didn't watch, didn't think, just did the right thing. It's SUCH a high - to know that I own this court, that I can see what my opponents will do before they do, that I don't need to run fast because I know where the ball's going to go before they hit it, I don't have to react because I KNOW.
But it's been so forever since I've felt that much at HOME on a tennis court. Just need to find time first to go out and hit serves for an hour or two...
But in other news, I screwed up today and got a parking ticket :( Traffic, parking, LA... It was Donlee's birthday, hence driving and parking in weird places and times and messing up. I don't like birthdays. Birthdays never go well for me.
Oh! Also watched Dr. Horrible's sing-along blog. I didn't like it as much as perhaps I would have expected, but I liked some of the songs a lot and I am now listening to the soundtrack. Is catchy!
Still have no idea what the hell is going on with my research or my paper or... :(
Sleep schedule totally broken, still need to take car to get oil change. Have been lazy about that, but it's starting to blink lights at me and is not happy. I will wake up tomorrow EARLY and fix both of those! Rly! Rly! Tomorrow's a brand new day! (Well, since it's past midnight now, not really, I guess.)
